"etymology_text": "Inherited from Old English slēan, from Proto-West Germanic *slahan, from Proto-Germanic *slahaną.\nDevelopment of the conjugation\nThe introduction of the strong class 7 finite past slew presumably originated in Northern Middle English, where Old English /oː/ developed into /iu̯/ before the /x/ or /ɣ/ of the finite past stem, meaning that removal of this consonant by analogy with present forms and the past participle was sufficient to result in a form that resembled strong class 7 past forms such as blew, grew, and threw. As strong class 7 verbs typically had a single stem in both the present and past participle, this resulted in extension of the past participle stem slay- into the present (aided by the incipient merger of /aː/ and /æi̯/ in some Northern varieties). This conflation brought the class 7 past tense with it as it spread southwards, aided by the analogy of the variation between drew- and drow- in the finite past of drawen.\nThe unusual persistence of the Old English umlauted past participle slæġen, sleġen as slayen, slayn (besides slawe, slawen from Old English slagan) is likely due to reinforcement by Old Norse sleginn.",
